The race to succeed Ted Lieu in the State Senate—-who is seeking the overlapping CD33—-has drawn an A-list group of Democratic candidates who see the possibility of twelve years representing this wealthy and solidly Democratic district. But, the path to get there for any of them is a long-shot and will be costly.

    Let’s look at the candidates:

    • Barbi Appelquist (D), a Santa Monica resident, is an attorney and graduate student at Pepperdine’s School of Public Policy.
    • Ben Allen (D) is a school board member in Malibu-Santa Monica, and has picked up the endorsements of State Senator Fran Pavley (who represents significant portions pre-redistricting) (dual endorsement), and current county longtime supervisor Zev Yaroslovsky.
    • Betsy Butler (D) is a former state Assemblymember who lost in a redistricting-caused battle for re-election. Butler lost to Richard Bloom. Butler is dual-endorsed by State Senat . . .
