    Analysis

The unexpected retirement of Henry Waxman on January 30 launched one of the most interesting Democratic primaries in the nation. Waxman had a strong challenge by conservative independent Bill Bloomfield in 2012. The retirement announcement came amidst polls suggesting confidence in incumbents declining and with fellow committee ranking member George Miller deciding to retire weeks earlier.

In the race at the time of Waxman's announcement and with strong fundraising performance for a liberal independent was author Marianne Williamson, who has raised (and spent) handsomely, along with producer Brent Roske--running as a more moderate independent.

However, the prospect of an open safe Democratic seat ensured the field would grow. Within days (or hours), State Senator Ted Lieu and former Los Angeles Controller Wendy Greuel jumped in the race. Later, attorney Barbara Mulvaney jumped in, as did WaPo columnist and KCRW host Matt Miller. All four are Democrats.
