I have many issues to write about today. However, I'll be back tomorrow on all of the big issues I'm following on Twitter. I don't escalate this issue for my own politics, but rather because it is one of the biggest issues in polling among suburban white moms.
This is the biggest move on tobacco ever and it reaches well beyond the actions in DC. It directly challenges the chair of the "gate"/"juice" committee of Assembly Governmental Organization (GO) chair Adam Gray (D-Merced) and the speakership of Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood).
The votes are there in the Assembly to unseat Rendon as Speaker if Gray stays as GO chair under Rendon in the dominant Democratic caucus or if Gray yields to tobacco/vaping legislation this year.
I've known Adam and Anthony well before when they were in the Assembly but Willie taught me how to count votes. This bill could be the end to both leadership roles after the JUUL fall from grace and several things.
As I've written before role as Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkns is similarly is challenged with the fight over Senator Scott Wiener's SB 50 on housing density, although counting votes on the red carpet is far easier.
This is all happening in a year in which may not see of the State of the State (not required) and a budget proposal issued beyond the normal high profile as Newsom tries to negotiate compromises in split roll property tax, MICRA (MedMal insurance caps) and AB 5 (ind. contractors). No Dems want a billion dollar ballot that we're currently heading for.
CAKEDAY: Happy birthday to Assemblyman Kevin McCarty!
