DISTRICT UPDATES

  • CA04 (Foothills): changed from Leans Republican to Toss-up (fundraising

Happy Tuesday! It's going to be a toasty day. The MLB All-Star game is at 5pm on FOX. The Angels's Mike Trout starts out in center field. The Giants's Brandon Crawfield starts at shortstop. The Dodgers's Matt Kemp starts at left. Buster Posey withdrew from the game due to an ailing hip.

It appears that all five "Voters Choice Act" counties exceeded statewide averages in turnout. It's not all that simple, but it appears to be progress. There are many factors, so we don't rush to judgment.

CADEM ENDORSEMENT: At the weekend's E-Board meeting of the California Democric Party, delegates endorsed State Senator Kevin de León. As predicted, it was a fight between the "Berniecrats" who want reforms and the "establishment. de León still has a tough row to hoe given Feinstein's name recognition.

U.S. SENATE: For Politico, Elena Schor looks at why Dianne Feinstein keeps on running:

As the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee for the coming confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Feinstein is about to take on a lead role in the biggest partisan battle of this election year. She’ll do so with a more progressive foe nipping at her heels back home — her general election opponent, state Sen. Kevin de León, overwhelmingly won the state party's endorsement over the weekend — and a pair of rising-star Democrats on the committee, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, setting a pugnacious tone for the confirmation clash.

SCOTUS WITH THE MOSTEST: In Capitol Weekly, Dylan Svoboda looks at how California public employee unions are adjusting following the Supreme Court's decision agains union "fair share" fees historically paid by non-members. "

We just need to continue hustling. It’s the right thing to do, whether we won or lost the Janus decision. We’re going to continue to engage the members, organize and fight for our profession and schools,” [the California Federation of Teachers spox Matthew] Hardy said.

As the article points out, the ruling wasn't a surprise by unions or court watchers, but reality is setting in. Nobody knows the impact, but I agree that parties need to go after indivindual owners.  Obviously, it's more an impact on the Democratic Party, but labor also plays in the Republican Party.

Upward Mobility at Cal State LA

MOSTLY GOOD NEWS: Primary Takeaways: Democracy Is Alive and Well in California (Mark Baldassare, PPIC)

CA48 (Huntington Beach): A new Monmouth University poll finds that the race is very close. Among likely voters, Democrat Harley Rouda has 47%, while incumbent Dana Rohrabacher (R) has 45%.

MIXED MESSAGES: The OCR's Jonathan Lansner looks at two recent rankings of California as a place to retire between 6th worst and 15th best. "Then look at the ranking divergence when it came to expenses. Yes, California’s expensive … but just how much pricier vs. other states is up for debate."
