Sorry about yesterday. Internet fail. Should have gone to Insight Coffee.

POLL POSITION: We have two new polls over the last 36 hours -- LA Times/USC Dornsife (online, n=691 registered voters/517 likelies) and Public Policy Institute of California (telephone, n=1702).

Governor (LAT/PPIC-likely voters):

  • Travis Allen: 5%/11%
  • John Chiang: 6%/9%
  • John Cox: 10%/19%
  • Delaine Eastin: 3%/6%
  • Gavin Newsom: 21%/25%
  • Antonio Villaraigosa: 11%/15%
  • Undecided: 39% /15%

U.S. Senate  (LAT/PPIC-likely voters):

  • James P. Bradley: 3%/n/a
  • Kevin de León: 7%/17%
  • Pat Harris: 2%/n/a
  • Patrick Little: 2%/n/a
  • Dianne Feinstein: 31%/41%
  • Undecided/Someone else: 41%/41%

Obviously, the top line are clear--Gavin Newsom is in the top spot for governor, as is Dianne Feinstein for U.S. Senate. Of course, even as voting has begun, there are plenty of undecided voters. In the governor's race, it's a fight between John Cox and Antonio Villaraigosa for the #2 spot.

LAT/USC finds 58% of Republican likely voters are undecided in the U.S. Senate race compared to 30% of Democrats and 46% of independents/others. Sure, a Republican couldn't beat Feinstein this year, but the party could have found somebody to mount a campaign.

Jerry Brown job approval (PPIC - likely voters):

  • Approve: 52%
  • Disapprove: 41%
  • Don't know: 7%

Legislature job approval (PPIC - likely voters)

  • Approve: 42%
  • Disapprove: 48%
  • Don't know: 10%

Top five issues (PPIC - likely voters - self identified):

  1. immigration/illegal immigration (19%)
  2. jobs/economy (15%)
  3. housing costs/affordability (9%)
  4. government in general, problems with elected officials, political parties (7%)
  5. state budget, deficiit, taxes (6%)

Proposed state budget (PPIC):

  • Favor: 60%
  • Oppose: 31%
  • Haven't heard anything about it: 4%
  • Don't know: 5%

BALLOTS: Paul Mitchell  tweets that 951,267 ballots have been returned.

GOV: 2010 gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman  has endorsed Antonio Villaraigosa for governor, reports Seema Mehta for the Times.

DIFI: The LAT's Sarah D. Wire looks at Dianne Feinstein's move to the left, including her recent change of heart to oppose the death penalty. Yup, this DiFi.

HOUSE: In the Times, Christine Mai-Duc reports that the LAT poll finds that the tax bill and Affordable Care Act votes will be on voters minds in considering re-election of congressional members in California this November.

CA04 (Foothills): For Capitol Weekly, Matthew Kramer looks at the race to challenge incumbent Tom McClintock in the district east of Sacramento.

Political handicappers believe McClintock faces a significant fight but likely will keep his seat. The Cook Political Report currently rates McClintock’s seat as “Likely – Not considered competitive…but (having) the potential to become engaged.” That’s a rating down from “Solid Seats,” which are not considered contested or competitive.
