State agency drops objection to city rules on waterfront development

A powerful state agency will drop a long-running legal challenge to restrictions on building heights along San Francisco’s waterfront under a settlement announced Wednesday that upholds local say over the city’s coveted shoreline. The State Lands Commission, which sued the city over Proposition B — approved by voters four years ago — agreed to let the measure’s development limits stand in exchange for guarantees from city officials that future projects would benefit not only San Francisco but all state residents. The lawsuit claimed that San Francisco’s waterfront belongs to the state and is managed by the San Francisco Port Commission, not the city and its voters.
