Happy Monday morning to you all! The Senate will hold a celebration of life in the chamber at 1pm for deceased senator Sharon Runner. Well liked on both sides of the aisle, it's certain to be an emotional affair.

If you missed yesterday's Nooner, I contextualized a national Politico story about female representation in government to California.

Today's political news is dominated by Trump's speech to the Detroit Economic Club. As a former community college advocate, the lack of talk of retraining was disheartening, but at least he was on message, particularly for the elected GOP lawmakers uncomfortable about his dedication to Republican positions. Trump promised details in the next few weeks.

MONEY MATTERS: Pension plan for millions of California workers still has issues [Dan Walters @ SacBee] - “Whether it takes hold in California depends on whether [Kevin] de León’s fellow Democratic politicians enact an embryonic plan that still has many unresolved issues – including the financial risk/reward tradeoffs of any retirement system that’s keyed to investment earnings, and whether the state’s taxpayers might be on the hook for any shortfalls.”

LOS LIBROS DE TEXTO: Bilingual education back on ballot 18 years after voters rejected it [Alexei Koseff @ SacBee] - “Eighteen years later, Lara is leading a push to reverse a law that he said put a “handcuff” on multilingual education in California when a globalizing economy has made knowing two or more languages a valuable asset.”

TOTAL INCOMPETENCE: UC Davis may issue emergency loans due to financial aid backlog [Diana Lambert] - “UC Davis is two months behind on processing financial aid and scholarships and may have to issue short-term loans to students so they can pay for books, food and rent when school begins Sept. 19, according to campus officials.”

What's happening to my beloved university?

#CAKEDAY: Happy birthday to Chris Lehman and Christopher Pickard!
