THE NOONER NIGHTCAP for October 27, 2012

E-10

With a huge number of independent expenditures reported yesterday and several news items, I offer you a Saturday Nooner Nightcap. It's very possible I will also send out the Election Contest link later on today. It'll feature 45 congressional, State Senate and Assembly races, and 6 ballot measures.

DATA: PDI added 172,587 online reg from counties last night for a total of 411,423. They will be continuing to load LA and other county updates over the next few days and expect to shoot well past the half-million mark in online registration. It is very likely that final voter registration will exceed 18 million voters for the first time.

ON POINT: The Secretary of State cautions county registrars that the "large influx of deadline day registrations that came in via the COVR and paper systems may lead to an increase in the number of people who may not be listed on your polling place rosters and who thus need to vote using a provisional ballot."

MORNING MUST READ: GOP's California dreams dashed [Jake Sherman @ Politico]

"But the Golden State isn’t the golden opportunity the GOP thought it was this cycle. Nearly every Republican in California and in D.C. privately concedes the same thing: They could wake up on Nov. 7 having lost every competitive seat in the state.

House Republican leaders, who hoped to be on offense in California, are now playing an expensive game of political defense."

While I personally think a sweep is unlikely, it certainly is a challenging landscape for Republicans. Then again, missteps by Democrats took CD31 off the playing field in June and made CD21 a very uphill battle.

TODAY'S MOST POPULAR EMAIL SUBJECT LINE: "10 Days to Go"

WASTE: Berman-Sherman race passes $13-million spending mark [Richard Simon @ LAT]

AD28: The MercNews's Tracey Kaplan profiles the race between Democrat Paul Fong and independent Chad Walsh.

WHITMAN REDUX? Romney spends big on firms tied to aides [Matea Gold, Maloy Moore and Melanie Mason @ LAT] (h/t Nadir Vissanjy)

NOVEMBER 7, OBAMA WINS: "Did Mitt Romney outraise Obama, but end up yielding less advertising points and ground operations because of his costly campaign structure?"

NOVEMBER 7, ROMNEY WINS: "You pay the best, you get the best."
