THE NOONER for May 18, 2012

jump to headlines

TWEET DU JOUR: @BorowitzReport - "#Facebook will be worth even more someday to the alien scientists trying to determine why humans perished."

CONTEST UPDATE: Sorry about the problem with the first contest e-mail last night, as everyone was essentially using the same userid. All is working fine now, and we already have over 100 entrants. If you are not sure whether your answers were saved to your userid, just click the link below and if your picks are there, you are fine.

Even if you come in first place, your answers will be confidential. After the contest closes, I will put out aggregated stats on picks for each of the races. And, for those of you who aren't happy with my use of Amazon gift certificates, I would LOVE to buy an equally valued gift certificate for a local business in your area.

Here is your unique URL to the contest:

New email subscribers to the Nooner will get codes to participate in the contest through Tuesday. Spread the word!

ABSENTEE BALLOT REPORT: Today's returned ballot report, from Political Data Inc. and Redistricting Partners.

AD74: California Professional Firefighters and the Police Officers Research Association of California yesterday reported joining for a $40,000 IE in favor of Leslie Daigle against Assemblymember Allan Mansoor. Meanwhile, Howard Ahmanson reports kicking in $1,500 for slate cards on behalf of Mansoor (and another $7,400 for Beth Gaines in AD06).

SURPRISE? ModBee: Chad Condit has chance at upset in 10th District race, experts say

BACK UP PLAN: Independent candidate Mark Green, who is running close for the top two in AD20, also is seeking appointment to fill Nadia Davis Lockyer's seat on the Alameda County Board of Supes.

AD33: Here is the mailer from SEIU State Council against Assemblymember Tim Donnelly. Remember, send me the best mail you see! Take this and this as examples of really bad mail that has made it to my mailbox this year.

LIKE: The LAO looks at today's impact of the Facebook IPO on state revenues.

IPO is actually not going as well as hoped.

FREE YOUR MIND: Politico's Kate Nocera writes that a number of GOP freshmen are turning on Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform pledge.

HOMELAND INSECURITY: Someone is breaking into U.S. Capitol offices, and retiring congressmember Jerry Lewis was hit.

EASIER SAID THAN DONE: The well financed goal of Americans Elect to have a national online primary for president for an alternative candidate has failed. David Weigel has a great wrap in Slate of the failure of the effort.

E-MAIL DU JOUR (for Obama):
