THE NOONER for April 17, 2012

jump to headlines

HAPPY TAX DAY AND TAX FREEDOM DAY! Yesterday, was, uh, sorta happy at the SCO, but we have a long way to go. For we Californians, Tax Freedom Day doesn't arrive until 4/20, when you'll finally be allowed to roll 'em and smoke 'em, by 'em I mean your Benjamins, rather than sending them to Sacramento.

After the jump, congressional fundraising totals.

Molly Munger's campaign is out with a new ad. I'm getting whispers that signatures could be turned in as early as next week. Meanwhile, the Nooner household got its petition for the compromise in the mail from the California Democratic Party.

EGG MEET FACE: The independent expenditure committee that I cited in yesterday's Nooner is not a renamed JobsPAC, but rather a coalition of business groups that got together last September. However, because $225,000 of the committee's $662,000 in 2011 receipts came from JobsPAC, the FPPC required that the committee be labeled as "sponsored by JobsPAC," which has now been dropped. This is because the committee also last year took $100,000 from Philip Morris and $162,000 from Anthem Blue Cross, reducing the share of the overall haul from JobsPAC. More recently, the California Real Estate PAC kicked in $250,000.

The point is, and I'm talking to you Molly, you can be the named sponsor of California Now's IE committee for a low, low price of a half mill or so. That's a better deal and more effective than Power Balance Arena! And, just think, you can then play in districts like SD19 under the name California Now, and make it seem like your candidate is fighting back agains the "war against women."

If you could sponsor an independent expenditure committee, what would you name it?
